Last night you heard the Prime Minister say that the list of tax offenders should not be published. And while the Minister of Finance doesn't believe in naming and shaming - today a source pointed us to the law - which Briceno took to the house in 2021. It's the tax and procedure amendment act of 2021 and it states that publication of defaulters is a duty.
Section 64 of the law says, quote, "The Director General shall from time-to-time cause to be published….a notice to all defaulters to the effect that warrants will be issued for the recovery of all taxes remaining unpaid for over twenty-one days from the issue of the notice, together with the penalty and interest due thereon."
And while that is the law that he passed, the PM said, quote, "It's unfortunate that that was made public."
