Yesterday on the news, you heard the UDP Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena concede that he has challenges with the current UDP Leadership. And tonight there is evidence of the mood of the Cayo Caucus in an April 2, 2026 letter to the party leader.
A number of UDP Cayo constituency caretakers and other prominent western caucus members expressed disappointment over the decision not to reappoint Alberto August to the Elections and Boundaries Commission.
They said the move blindsided members, especially after assurances were reportedly given in February that August would remain in the post. The group praised August's performance on the commission, describing him as fearless and committed to the party's interests, particularly during disputes surrounding alleged electoral fraud in Cayo North. The caucus also raised broader concerns about what it called increasing centralized decision-making within the party and warned that sidelining strong UDP regions such as the West in national appointments could damage party unity, morale, and future electoral support.
