Sol Belize, formerly Shell Belize, today opened a new basketball court at the Buttonwood Bay Nazarene Primary School. We spoke to Sol's country manager Joe Habet and the school's principal Ruth Castillo. Habet told us that Sol adopted the school last year.

Joe Habet, Sol Belize
"Last year we actually adopted the school. Our first project was the fence but we didn't have an opening for that. We built the fence that you can see here. We constructed that in the early part of last year and then right after that we started working on the court. The court took a while because of weather but we finally got it done now. So we worked on the court and this is the second part of our project and then the others, we'll get into a discussion with the principal and other stakeholders of the school to decide what project we'll work on for this year."

Ruth Castillo, Principal
"Needless to say I am very happy and as a staff we are definitely overjoyed. I guess most importantly it will offer them an alternative to being on the streets and things like that, they can have after school practice and really enhance their skills in playing basketball."

The court cost about $10,000 and Habet notes that area representative Francis Fonseca as well as contractor Raul Martinez chipped in to pay for the project.
