The start of the hurricane season is two months away but the weather experts at Colorado State University who are considered the authority on forecasting storm activity, say that this year’s season will show average storm activity. That’s down from an above average year in 2008, and it’s also down from the initial 2009 forecast which was made in December. So it’s mildly encouraging, but certainly not any reason to abandon your family’s disaster preparedness plan. Chief Met Officer, Denis Gonguez discussed the latest analysis with us today.

Dennis Gonguez, Acting Chief Met Officer
“It looks like an average season the way they are looking at it and in a typical year we have 10 named storms, we have six hurricanes, and two of those intense. This prediction for this year, it looks like 12 named storms and the 12 named storms, the 6 hurricanes and the two intense hurricanes which is indicating an average season. But again it is an early season prediction, from April, so anything can happen in the next prediction that comes out in May.”
