The dream of competition in the phone business now seems remote, as the floundering Intelco today laid off a third of its staff.
As we had reported the company did not meet it's midmonth payday until Friday 10 days after the fifteenth. This morning, there were reportedly 46 letters waiting at the gate for those who were being terminated. According to our reports they were given their letters and locked out of the compound. With this most recent layoff, the company currently has a staff of about 70 persons most of them very concerned about the next payday at the end of the month.
And if that isn't enough of a red light, over the weekend, Intelco also shut down its offices in Orange Walk and Belmopan. We were unable to reach CEO Juan McKenzie for comment as he is out of the country after leaving town on Friday.
