The dispute over charges for unloading cargo vessels at the Port in Belize City continues and again the owner of the private port is at the center of the fury. This afternoon we spoke with President of the Shipping Agents William Bowman who told us that his group is presently seeking legal recourse to resolve the situation. Bowman says the Association cannot accept the increases that are retroactive to December because it will reflect a loss to them and an increase in prices for products landed at the Port which means higher prices on the shelves. As we had reported Ports of Belize Limited announced that the cost of unloading a 20 foot container is now $350 when the approved rate from the office of the regulatory body, the Ports Commissioner, is only $200.
