In February, we took a look at new and innovative ways that poverty is being alleviated in the deep south that included the Tumul Kin Bee Project. Well today, three months later, Tumul Kin launched its first product which hits shelves shortly. Its high quality bottled honey and in launching the new product, the Managing Director of Tumul Kin said that this step is in keeping with the school's philosophy of offering relevant and practical education to their students.
"There are additional benefits to the honey project. I think it contributes to the very goals and essence of Tumul Kin in the sense that it bas allowed us to create an outdoor classroom where students can experience the production of honey, learn about producing honey, learn about quality control, and learn how to process it, how to package it, how to market it. So it is a real life experience, an outdoor classroom as we call it. It has allowed to generate income to continue to provide education to the students. It contributes t to the protection of the environment by using the forests rather than clearing them to produce honey, the more trees there and the more flowers they are, the more honey can be produced so therefore it is being promoted as an alternative livelihood through which greater income generation can come to the communities and finally it contributes to poverty reduction in the sense that Tumul Kin is not only to sell its own honey, but to create an outlet for honey in the south so that farmers can sell the honey through Tumul Kin through that name. In fact we are already buying honey from a number of farmers in Toledo."
Funding for the honey production comes through PACT and GEF.
