Last year we reported on sofa sets stuffed with pampers but while following up on the story we found that there was no functioning Bureau of Standards and no consumer protection department. So, all those folks who bought pamper-stuffed sofa’s had nowhere to turn; all they could do was lean on the very slender mercies of the retailer who sold them the couches in the first place – and for most of them that went nowhere. And sorry cases like that are what’s pushing the new Ministry of Economic Development to establish a strong Bureau of Standards. They held an orientation session in Belmopan today to tell sister agencies and authorities like BAHA that there’s work to do. Now the only folks left to get the memo are shady retailers and acting director of the Bureau of Standards Jose Trejo says they too will be put on notice.
Jose Trejo, Bureau of Standards
“We hope that the private sector will appreciate our efforts and our initiative to reenergize the bureau in terms of how it is being perceived. The image that we want to create is certainly one that is to work along with them, not to castigate or chastize them, our producers and importers because standards is applicable to local producers importers as well.”
