Since the Barrow administration introduced the new fuel regime eliminating the revenue replacement duty, we’ve seen a few anomalies, like in January when a gallon of diesel was more expensive than a gallon of premium gas – and now, we’ve observed another. When the pump price was adjusted on Monday morning a strange thing happened: the price of a gallon of regular fuel was made to be more than a gallon of premium fuel. Regular has shot up to seven dollars and eighty cents a gallon, while premium is steady at seven dollars and sixty five cents a gallon.
What’s the explanation? Simple, a Ministry of Finance official explained that the shipment only carried regular fuel so only the increase in that cost could be reflected. When the next shipment of premium arrives in a few weeks, it is expected to increase as well – and once again resume its customary price – which is about ten cents per gallon more than regular.
And while fuel is all over the place, butane is going down three dollars per 100 pound cylinder. The controlled price for a hundred pound cylinder – undelivered – is down from 90 dollars to 87 dollars in the city. That three dollar difference will be reflected at a commensurate rate in other municipalities.
