Belize Sugar Industries Limited has donated 25 refractometers to the cane Harvesting Group Leaders of the sugar industry in the north. These should help farmers to select the sweetest and most mature cane to harvest so that sugar yields can be maximized.
Viewers may remember that in 2017, BSI's majority shareholder, American Sugar Refineries, partnered with the Hershey Company Limited to launch this program. It was executed by the ASR Group in collaboration with the Sugar Cane Production Committee with co-funding from the Hershey Company, and the participating test group leaders.
That 3-year program came to a close last year. BSI says that during its lifespan, many positive outcomes were recorded, including the enrollment of 18 Test Groups; 250 Harvest Group Leaders; and the participation of 4,904 farmers.
