And the CEO's other portfolio is civil aviation, so we asked about the rehabilitation works for Sir Barry Bowen and the Caye Caulker airstrips. Works for the former will occur from April 17th until July 17th, whereas in June, the latter will be closed for six weeks.

But those airstrips recently underwent construction not ten years ago, so why is it that they're being rehabilitated again? CEO Carillo said it's because it wasn't properly done last time around.

Kennedy Carillo, CEO, Ministry of Blue Economy
"We know that there were massive investments made in these airstrips both in San Pedro, Belize City and also in Caye Caulker and obviously if it been done well we would not be confronted with a situation where the pilots themselves are stating concerns for the runway that has already dents and poses a lot of threats to them and listening to these concerns we, through the work of the Belize Airport Authority were able to conduct assessments and recognize that there was an urgency to do this and so the funds were secured for the rehabilitation for both of these and then we will also be looking at San Pedro."

"It's concerning, because the Caye Caulker airport the last time it was rehabilitated was 2018 and the Belize City one was 2016 - these aren't long ago."

Kennedy Carillo, CEO, Ministry of Blue Economy
"It means that it was not done properly. You see what's happening on the Northern Highway right now and all of us know that these was just recently completed at the tune of millions of dollars and now we have to go back and do it right and so that is what we are about at this time."
