Government has been back at the helm of the Port of Belize for all of two and a half working days - but already some very loud grumbling has started. Right now, It's coming from the Big Creek Group - owners of the Port of Big Creek - who wrote a letter to the Prime Minister on Friday saying that they are "concerned" and "disappointed" with the recent acquisition because they say it creates instability in the industry. They note that they were never consulted and state, quote, "it was a decision made in secret driven by political considerations and not consistent with prudent economic or business practices….We categorically reject the utilization of government funds, influence, or security to enhance a facility that directly competes with the Port of Big Creek." End quote.
They conclude also, that "GOB continues to put emphasis on the welfare of POB stevedores and the residents of southside Belize City at the expense of those in Southern Belize,"
CEO Zaid Flores adds, quote, "I am most disappointed in your decision, especially after you had personally given us your assurance that GOB would not acquire the port and put us through the very same experience you and your family continue to bear with SMART. There was no need to nationalize POB to settle the government's debt."
Flores laments, quote, "GOB does not play by the same rules or standards to which private entities are held. You are now the player and referee. The GOB will ensure that POB is successful since the public purse is at its disposal...
This acquisition will no doubt undermine investor confidence and most importantly, puts in question the future of the Port of Big Creek whose development now depends on GOB and not a free enterprise system....we request that GOB grants the Port of Big Creek the same accommodations and benefits as it will afford the POB. We expect a level playing field." End quote.
We note that the Port's owners have been consistent supporters of the Briceno Administration; this shot across Briceno's bow is seen as a sharp change in position.
