Last week the pump price of diesel went up by 20% per gallon and now the Belize Bus Association is calling on government to increase bus fares. The BBA today wrote to Transport Minister Luis Zabaneh requesting government intervention following recent increases in fuel prices.
In the letter, the association says the rising cost of fuel and vehicle parts has significantly increased operational expenses for bus companies across the country.
The BBA is asking the government to consider several options to ease the burden on operators.
Among the proposals are the exemption of General Sales Tax on fuel, tires, and parts; the provision of government subsidies similar to those provided during the COVID-19 pandemic, or allowing bus operators to increase fares to offset the higher costs.
We'll be following up with the Ministry of Transport for a response.
