The Government of Belize still has not decided what it plans to do with the Cuban Medical Brigade presently in Belize. Latest figures from the Ministry of Health and Wellness say that the brigade comprises 94 persons: 37 Medical doctors, 47 nurses, 8 technicians and two administrators.
Removing them from their posting would likely cause a system wide shock to the public health system, especially in rural areas where they are deployed.
As we have reported, Belize and other Caribbean and Latin American nations have been under US pressure to end the medical cooperation program because the Trump administration believes it funds the Cuban communist government.
US news reports say that the Trump administration is offering incentives such as "infrastructure modernization" to countries that kick out Cuban doctors.
In recent months, Guatemala, Paraguay, the Bahamas, Guyana and Jamaica have bowed to US pressure and sent home Cuban doctors.
