Even though they've only found a few body parts - Belmopan police have identified the remains of a man found yesterday in the Riviera area as Adoli Moralez, a Honduran national. The man accused of killing him, 30 year old Deris Antonio Torres, a Guatemalan confessed to the crime on Monday, and showed police where he buried the body. Torres told police that he killed Moralez on April the 14th. After discovering that he had been stealing his tools. He struck him to the side of the head with a machete, then finished his day's work, and buried him later in the night with the help of a friend. Moralez - who is known to Belmopan police as a petty thief - was stuffed in a crocus bag, and dumped into a natural well. Two and half months later, police forensic teams only found his legs - even after an excavator dug out the area. Still, they had enough to charge Torres and he was taken to court this morning in Belmopan city. It's one of the first times that investigators have caught a killer before they found his victim, and Commissioner of Police Jose Carmen Zetina says that it's the product of the community and the police working together:
Jose Carmen Zetina, COMPOL
"The case is one of those cases where people fully cooperated, right? One, two, three witnesses, very good witnesses in the case that help us in solving this crime."
Jules Vasquez
"Is there any indication that the man who's charged had a history of violence before, that this is not perhaps the first time he has killed?"
Jose Carmen Zetina, COMPOL
"Well everything seems to suggest from what we know, from the witnesses, that this man is prone to commit violence. Certainly there is no doubt in my mind that he has done this previously, whether here in Belize or elsewhere in Guatemala."
Torres has been remanded to the Hattieville prison. Police couldn't find any next of kin for Adoli Moralez - and since his death in April, no missing persons report was filed.
