Man Gets 16 Years After Conviction Of Rape Handed Down

A Belize City man was today sentenced to 16 years in prison after he was found guilty of the crime of rape. Forty-one year old Stanley Lewis yesterday appeared before Justice Samuel Lungole Awich to face the end of a case of rape. A jury of 6 women and 3 men unanimously found Lewis guilty of rape at around 8:00p.m. last night and he was subsequently sentenced to 16 years imprisonment. The conviction comes after a 32 year old woman accepted a ride from Lewis in August of 2000 where she was taken to a feeder road around mile 12 on the Western highway and Lewis raped her. At the time Lewis had told the woman that he had a gun and threatened to kill her if she said anything. She however made a report and Lewis was picked up four months later at the time at his place of employment in the BEL compound on Logwood Street. Lewis had, as his alibi, his wife with whom he has three children. The victim also has two children of her own.
