And in news of more police behaving badly an officer attached to the Corozal police station is on interdiction tonight after being charged for extortion.
It is alleged that on Holy Thursday a Mexican family heading into Belize was stopped at the border by police constable Reginald Ciego. The driver was wearing no seatbelt but instead of issuing a ticket or a warning, constable Ciego allegedly told the driver he had to pay him U.S. $140. The man claims he paid up and later reported the matter to police and Ciego was charged with extortion.
He was arraigned in court this morning and was released on $5,000 bond. He is due back in court on July 29th.
