The BDF claims that Guatemalan Xateros shot at them first, but the Guatemalans continue to investigate the case - and today representatives of the Ombudsman's office in that country visited Juventino Saldivar Cabrera at the Hattieville prison to get his account of what happened.
After that the team of 8 met with Belize's Ombudsman Paul Rodriguez who refused to give them his opinion on a matter, which had not been fully investigated. They expressed concerns about what they called a high level of violence in the border area. Rodriguez expressed his concern that the Guatemalan team were too eager to believe Cabrera's story without investigation.
Cabrera is remanded pending charges of illegal entry, keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, attempted murder, aggravated assault and illegal harvesting of forestry product.
As we've reported his partner Lorenzo Espino was allegedly shot by the BDF but made it to Guatemala where he is recovering. The issues will take center stage in upcoming meetings with the Guatemalans in Washington on May 4th.
