Last night two men rode into the generally peaceful and close knit Yabra re-development housing area on Caesar Ridge road and one of them opened fire.
In a few seconds, they fired as many as 9 gunshots, which landed at the doorstep of Diane Williams. The bullets were aimed at her 19-year-old son Godfrey Hemsley. But instead they caught his aunt, Jacklyn, who is tonight in a stable condition at the KHMH with a bullet wound to her left thigh. Jacklyn's prognosis for recovery is good and the only other remnants of last night's gun assault are bullet marks, which now decorate her sister's verandah.
And then there is Diane Williams who is angry with the gunmen, scared for son, and demanding for the violence to end. Still visibly shaken from last night's shooting, she recounted the events as she remembered.
Diane Williams, House Shot-up
"Everything happened so fast. I was in my kitchen helping my little son with his homework and my sister Jaclyn and my son were on the verandah sitting down talking about basketball when it sounded like just dynamite started to pop. So we only heard Jaclyn got hurt and then I was screaming for my son because I knew he was sitting on the chair and Jaclyn was standing up. After that my other son kicked the door open and my sister said she couldn't get up or move. Then I thought my other son got shot so when I looked Jaclyn got the shot in her hipline. So you know, so many shots sprayed out last night."
Keith Swift,
"You think they were after your son Godfrey?"
Diane Williams,
"Yes it was after him and for what reason I do not know. This thing has to stop. This has been going on too long; this is the second time they came to shoot my house. It could have been me, it could have been one of my grandsons, and it could have been one of my other kids. This thing has to stop. I don't know why they are doing this because I am not swearing that my son is good, I don't swear for nobody but at the same time I never think yet he went to shoot-up any of their parents' house to make them feel how I feel right now - my son could have been dead and I could have still been bawling right now. My sister is lying in a hospital bed right now because of this simpleness (sic). This has to stop."
Police say they have one suspect detained for the shooting. You may remember that in February of this year, the intended target of last night's attack Godfrey Hemsley gave 7NEWS a bedside interview after he was shot. He survived that and last night's shooting but not taking anything for granted, he is no longer living with his mother because of a fear for his life.
