Two accused murderers escaped from police today? and one of them is still at large tonight. Darrington Luriano and Basil Willis had been brought down from the Hattieville prison to appear at the magistrate's court and were being held in detention at the Queen Street Station. But when officers made checks on them at 1:30 this afternoon, the pair had escaped. Basil Willis returned, we are informed, on his own will. Luriano however is still at large tonight. Police blame the escape on a newly assigned special constable who was on duty at the cell block and did not properly close the door, allowing the prisoners to just walk out. They are the third and fourth police prisoners to escape in two days and one senior officer is facing disciplinary charges.

As for one of the other escapees, alleged robber, Daniel Hemmans who escaped yesterday he has been recaptured and faced charges today. It's not that clear cut a case for Dean Gillett who slipped away from police on Monday after he had already received bail. Even though police wanted him for questioning, because he was on bail, he could not be charged with escape. So today Gillett appeared at the police station with his attorney and they assessed him with two more charges. He appeared in court to be charged for two counts of handling stolen goods, specifically 10,948 dollars worth of fixtures and supplies from a local hardware store and an air conditioner valued at 3,850. He received bail of 10 thousand dollars and the prosecution pointed out that more charges will be brought against the defendants.
We should note that what we reported as a possibility two nights ago, did not happen; Gillett has not been assessed with charges related to or directly implicated in passing a forged government check, specifically, uttering, and obtaining property by deception.
