It may not be commonplace in Belize City, but in the sugar cane belt of northern Belize machetes are just about as common and widely used as brooms. So its not unusual to see small boys carrying a Collins. But a custom turned into a tragedy yesterday in Carmelita Village. At around 3 in the afternoon, 7 year old Cecilio Hernandez of Carmelita village was in his yard running around with a machete when he tripped over some branches and fell on the blade.
When police visited the scene they found the child dead on the ground with a large cut wound to the left side of his chest. A post mortem certified that he had died as a result of internal and external bleeding as the blade of the machete punctured his heart.
