Dean Gillett's killing last week was a sensational event, as the well known Belize city resident was gunned down in the front yard of a fresh pond community home. Well today a man was charged for killing him, but police say it was not murder, and his lawyer says, it was self-defense.

23 year old Dexter Hemmans, who lives in the house where Dean Gillett was killed, was charged with manslaughter. The details of the charge, read to Hemmans by magistrate Dorothy Flowers, is that on September 15th., whilst armed with a pump action shotgun, he caused the death of Dean Gillett by "unlawful harm." But Hemmans’ attorney Dickie Bradley argued that unlawful harm has not been established, and Hemmans should not have been charged at all.

Bradley argued that Hemmans was just defending himself and his family from what he called "an unlawful attack." Police prosecutor Clinton Magdaleno who did not object to bail, also told the court that Hemmans is under police protection. With that magistrate flowers granted bail of 5 thousand dollars. Gillett's alleged accomplices Jermaine Barrow and Eugene Carter were charged on Monday. It is alleged that Gillett and both men went to the house on the night of September 14th. armed and issuing threats for the head of the house. Gillett was killed on the lawn when they returned on the 15th.
