A 2 year old boy was accidentally killed Friday in Xaibe village and his great grandfather is claiming responsibility.

Up to newstime, Corozal police had yet to formally charge 75-year-old Frojedos Catch for the death of the little boy. Police are saying the child was killed Friday afternoon when he picked up his great grandfather's 16-gauge shotgun and fired a single fatal shot. The child was at the family house in the village with Catch's granddaughter who was getting water from a well. Catch had reportedly just returned from hunting and laid the gun against his door when the little boy started playing with it.

And while that is the official story, reports to 7NEWS from sources in Xaibe Village are that Catch may be taking the blame to cover for what may be the real shooter, an 11 year old cousin of the victim. This is unconfirmed but our sources say the shooting was accidental but to shield his grandson from any scrutiny, Catch decided to take the rap and cop to being reckless with his gun.

This might partly explain why police have yet to formally charge him in connection with Friday afternoon's shooting. His great grandson was buried yesterday in Xaibe village while this afternoon Catch was in Corozal Magistrate's court to answer an unrelated charge of wounding.
