18-year-old Rosa Mejia was killed on Monday, allegedly by her enraged common law husband, policeman, 41-year-old Jose Zetina. Since then her family has been trying to come to terms with the brutal and merciless killing of this teenaged mother of one, who 7NEWS has confirmed had another on the way. Today all that grief came home to her family as her body was taken to her house in Maskall where she was buried. We traveled there this afternoon and found the family still at a loss for answers and still asking how is it that a man sworn to uphold the good could be accused of something so awful.
Alfonso Noble Reporting, [From Boston Village]
This afternoon the body of 18-year-old Rosa Mejia laid at Boston Village awaiting burial. As it did, family members held their vigil knowing that it was her common law husband of two years who savagely took her life. All this in the presence of his children, rosa's 1 year old son as well as her two brothers who had gone to Cayo looking for her.
Maria Estel Montoya, Victim's Sister
[Translation] "My little brother told her that he was leaving, when he did this she told him to wait because she was coming along as well. He told her that she was not going anywhere that she had to stay with him. That is when he went to the kitchen and pulled a knife and said that if she left he would kill himself. At that time my little brother went outside. When he heard something fell he tried to go back into the house and he did not allow my brother inside because his shirt is even stained with blood from where he pushed my brother because he had already stabbed her."
Rosa received as many as seven wounds; to her head, her jaw, and her left arm was severed. She also had a stab wound to the chest where the family claims a piece of knife blade was embedded.
Maria Estel Montoya,
[Translation] "The doctor says that a cut she received to her chest was where she was stabbed, they were talking and they said that he broke the blade in her. I wanted them to show me it but they did not want to."
While that is how it ended Montoya says that her sister's death came because Zetina coerced her into going to him.
Maria Estel Montoya,
[Translation] "He held her in Belize, took her into custody and then he took her son and went to Cayo with him. She then went looking for him because she loved her son a lot."
"She went to Cayo to look for her son because he told her that if she wanted her child she would have to go to Cayo for him."
"He coerced her, not by beating her but with the baby. He used to tell her that if she left him he would take her child away. That was the fear she had when he took the baby from her."
Now family members could only stand around and remember her last words as she left to go look for her baby.
Maria Estel Montoya,
[Translation] "She told us to wait for her on Monday. We thought that she would have returned with her baby, happy as always, because she was always a happy girl but when we were told we thought that it was an accident or something that had happened. We never expected for this to happen. What we ask is that justice be done. Not because he is a policeman should this stay like that. "
And it should not stay like that because the one who is alleged took life was a policeman and making matters worse is that a post mortem confirmed that she was between 4 and 5 weeks pregnant.
41-year-old Constable Jose Zetina has been remanded on a charge of murder. He had been with Rosa Mejia for two years, since she was 16.
