The man who attacked a teenage girl inside her bedroom will spend the next 9 years in jail for the vicious sexual assault. Yesterday in Magistrate's Court the accused 38-year-old Renel Sanker was found guilty of aggravated burglary and wounding.
7NEWS first reported the disturbing story a year ago on March 25 of 2004 when the girl was sleeping inside her Lake Independence home when Sanker. who is her neighbor, broke into her house through a window. She told us that Sanker put a knife to her neck and attempted to rape her. Even with that threat of death, the 13-year-old girl fought off Sanker who allegedly stabbed her to the left side of her face in the process. The victim says she immediately identified Sanker by his voice who is a carpenter and lives in her neighborhood. During the trial Sanker professed his innocence however presiding Magistrate Sharon Frazer pointed out inconsistencies in his testimony such as the blood on his shirt, which he claimed was ketchup. Forensic tests confirmed it was in fact blood. His 13-year-old victim took the stand and in delivering her judgment the Presiding Magistrate called the girl's testimony "straightforward and unshaken." With that she sentenced Sanker to 7 years for aggravated burglary and 2 years for the wounding. That adds up to 9 years. Sanker will spend another 5 years in jail for a separate burglary conviction.
