An elderly woman and a child perished in a blaze _in Independence Village on Monday night. At around 7:30 police visited an area known as trench town in the village where they found a small wooden structure completely destroyed. Inside police found the bodies of two persons who had been inside the home during the blaze. They are 60-year-old Elizabeth Diego and her grandson, 1-year-old Rudolph Green. Investigations by police so far have determined that Diego's common law husband placed a pot of water on a table top stove to warm. He went to bed shortly after that and woke to find himself inside a burning house. He managed to escape unharmed but Diego and green were not that fortunate. The gas tank attached to the stove exploded killing both grandmother and child.
