A boating accident was almost a disaster in the open seas after two water taxis collided yesterday evening.
At around 5:25 Caye Caulker Water Taxi 'Tsunami' was heading from Caye Caulker to Belize City and 'Big Al' was traveling in the opposite direction. Both vessels reached a narrow channel between Caye Chapel and Caye Caulker at the same time, and the two boats collided.
Tsunami had 39 passengers on board while Big Al had 45. Fortunately of that 84, only three persons received minor injuries. One woman received a shoulder injury and she was treated and released at the Medical Associates.
We spoke to President of the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association, Ramon Reyes, who says the Association is looking at the possibility of not using the small channel, which is a shortcut, anymore. Meanwhile the captains of both boats have been suspended.
