Customs officials had yet another confrontation with residents of Orange Walk over the age old issue contraband. Reports are that this morning at around 7 one man was trying to smuggle in uncustomed goods from the Mexican town of Botes.
He was inside a canoe with various items when he sighted Customs and police authorities on the other side of the river. To avoid detention the man jumped into the river and swam back to the Mexican side while authorities managed to get hold of the canoe. With the help of a pickup truck officials dragged the boat out of the water and onto the road for approximately 12 miles. As this footage shows the canoe was completely destroyed while it also bore bullet holes.
As we had reported back in June 6 (See Contrabandidos Busted) the area has become a hotbed of activity with law officials trying to get a handle of the situation of contraband making its way into the Orange Walk District. In fact confrontation in the are has escalated over the past so much that, as this footage shows expended shells, the use of firearms has become a regular occurrence.
