18-year-old Santa Clara resident Jorge Cantun was killed on Monday in the Rio Hondo River at the Belize/Mexico border and his family says the Mexican Navy is to blame.

According to reports in Diario de Quintana Roo, on Monday afternoon, Cantun was swimming in the river near the Belize-Guatemala Bridge when a patrolling Mexican Navy vessel ran him over in the water. The young lady he was with managed to escape, but Cantun was crushed against the support beams for the bridge and died on the spot.

He was taken to a Mexican morgue, according to the newspaper, because Belizean authorities said they had no vehicle to come and pick him up. Funeral services for him were held this morning in Santa Clara Village.

The family is concerned because the Mexican Navy has not taken any responsibility for the teenager's death and in fact is accused of running him over and then just continuing down the Rio Hondo without stopping to render aid.
