It is now confirmed to be the biggest drug bust ever, police finished weighing the seizure last night and it came in at a record 2,376 kilos or 5,238 pounds. The drugs were found on Monday afternoon buried under a house on a small island in the Tobacco Caye Range.
And there's one more update that you might be happy to hear about. Commissioner of Police Gerald Westby today called 7NEWS to confirm that our cameras will be allowed to tape the destruction of the record seizure. It's never been an issue before, but it became one yesterday because Assistant Commissioner Crispin Jeffries said that we would not be permitted to freely videotape the destruction of the drugs. Westby today told us that there are security concerns that Jeffries was trying to protect but the need for transparency outweighs that. The police must now apply to the court to burn the drugs. Notably we were not allowed to tape the drugs at the station yesterday because of those security concerns.
