21-year-old Harvey Lee Henderson will spend the rest of his life behind bars for brutally chopping to death an elderly man nearly two years ago. On Thursday evening a jury convicted the Corozal resident of murder and this morning Justice Adolph Lucas sentenced him to life in prison.
On Friday Henderson's attorney Simeon Sampson begged the judge for leniency in deciding on a sentence because prior to the murder Henderson had a clean police record. He also asked the court to consider that Henderson played football and participated in other community activities. In addition he pointed out that Henderson lost his father at age 7.
The murder occurred back in January of 2004 when 76-year-old Alfonso Esperidion Santos was ambushed by a gang of three men; he was beaten, stabbed, chopped, and then left for dead. Henderson was charged along with two brothers but the case against them never made it past arraignment.
