7NEWS has learnt of a shocking case of human trafficking and child abuse, which occurred in Belize. 7NEWS has received credible but unofficial reports that a 13-year-old girl has been returned to Belize from El Salvador. She was found there with an American man as her guardian. He told authorities in that country that he bought her from her parents in Belmopan in June of this year.
Our investigation has shown that while the deal was transacted in Belmopan, her parents are actually from the Cowpen area. The child, who is reportedly a Belizean, has not been returned to her parents and is being kept at a children's shelter in Belmopan. Today police in the capital recorded her statement and have launched an investigation. So far, that investigation has shown that her parents did not report her missing at any time. Because of this, the child will continue to live at a shelter, until suitable guardians are found.
