A 21-year-old man is recovering in the KHMH tonight after he was almost shot to death last night. At around 3 this morning, Sheldon Watler was in the area of Archie's Restaurant on Central American Boulevard when someone from across the other side of the boulevard fired a single shot at him. The bullet went through and through his neck. Doctor's say he's lucky to be alive, but you won't believe why family members say he was shot. They today told us that it may have had something to do with him wearing a Steelers jersey. That's right, the same Pittsburgh Steelers who bested the Seattle Seahawks in last night's NFL Superbowl. It's never been a huge sporting event here in Belize, particularly on the southside, so what's really behind the shooting? Watler's mother told us.
Watler's Mother,
"He went to buy a fry chicken and that's when he got shop."
Alfonso Noble,
Who was it that shot him and why?
Watler's Mother,
"He says he didn't see who shot him because some boys were under a tree over the next side of Archie's so he doesn't know who shot him because it was in the dark and he was on the street innocently."
Alfonso Noble,
What happened after he got shot?
Watler's Mother,
"He went home, because we don't live far, he went back inside, but didn't wake me up, and he made a call to 911 and the police brought him to the hospital. I am very surprised because he is a person who doesn't have a lot of friends, he only messes around with the people he works with. Anybody can tell you that he doesn't messes around with no one. I have lived through there for like four and a half years and he doesn't even know people on that street. He isn't even usually out there because he goes to sleep early because he has to get up early to go to work, he goes to work very early in the morning."
Alfonso Noble,
Are you glad that it wasn't worse?
Watler's Mother,
"Yes I am happy he is still living, I still have him with me; I am glad for that."
Watler underwent surgery this morning and is tonight recovering at the KHMH.
