He's been dead for 25 years now but don't tell that to the legion of Bob Marley fans who say that 25 years later, the reggae legend lives on through his music. Today Marley would have been 61 years old and throughout the city, fans have been celebrating all weekend. And while for 14 years Marley fans celebrated the anniversary at the Yabra Field, now City Hall has refused to grant organizers a license. In fact Emerson Guild told us that late today City Hall also refused to even rent him a stage. So this year the party will be a block party at Guild's home on Central American Boulevard between Vernon and Mahogany Streets. Guild told us despite the setbacks, they will celebrate.
Emerson Guild,
"Bob Marley has done something very special for us, he lived in a country and in a time where civil liberties was demanded. Here in Belize we seem to be like not sure what civil liberties are or even to stand up for our rights.
We have a classic guitarist that's going to perform by himself on guitar, we have drummers that are going to perform percussion, we have rap, we have hip hop, and we have the middle of the road reggae which is what I love because that is what I play.
We're going to be playing music, live music, all evening. As long as we have musicians showing up, we will be performing live and I hope we have musicians that are going to make this thing last all night."
Again the party is on Central American Boulevard between Vernon and Mahogany streets. Entrance is free.
