He fled Belize in 2002 but tonight notorious street figure Arthur Young is in jail for murder. Young was this evening arraigned in Magistrate's Court for the August 2nd 2002 murder of Jose Chavarria on East Canal. Since that time, Young was apprehended by U.S. authorities in New York, deported to Belize, remanded for a short time, then release, and went into hiding. But now police say they have the evidence to charge him for the 2002 murder.
It was a particularly ruthless killing, because police say that Chavarria, who was riding his bicycle, was shot first in his head execution style. But it didn't end there because witnesses say a second man came and kicked Chavarria and fired another shot. Commander of the CIB, Assistant Superintendent of Police Chester Williams that they got the break in the case when Young came back to Belize.
ASP Chester Williams, Commander, C.I.B.
"Since this murder occurred, Arthur Young was the suspect from the inception of the investigation. However he evaded the law in Belize by going into the United States. He was deported back to Belize sometime last year and since then we have continued the investigation and the investigation has so far led to where we are today with Arthur Young being formally arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of Jose Chavarria."
Keith Swift,
What was the motive back then?
ASP Chester Williams,
"By going through the case file, again I will say that the motive seemed to have been a gang rivalry between the George Street and the Rocky Road people at the time. As we are all aware, the years 2001 to 2002 was a time when there was intense gang rivalry between those two groups and we believe the motive for that particular murder was gang related.
We have overwhelming evidence. We have IC witnesses who saw him on the particular night in question, pulling the trigger, and firing the shot at the deceased which caused the fatal injury. So I am certain that we have good enough evidence to present to a court of law against Arthur Young.
At this point in time, we don't have much major incidents occurring and that has given me time to peruse some of those old case files and I am taking my time to do it because I am certain that there are many of them that only need a little more for us to be able to make an arrest and this effort will continue to be pursued by myself and my office."
Earlier this week police arrested and charged 27-year-old Kenroy Tillet for the 2001 murder of 31-year-old Clint Geban.
