Police estimate that 8,000 people were in the city center on Saturday night for the Beenie Man and Wayne Wonder concert. But the night came to a breathless halt for dozens of fans who left the City Center sneezing, coughing, while at least four people passed out. Today the Police Department says: "it wasn't us." In fact the police say it was more like pepper spray and commander of C.I.B. Chester Williams says the noxious fumes came from party crashers who wanted to enter the concert without paying.
ASP Chester Williams,
The chemical that was release in the place was definitely not tear gas. I believe that it was some type of pepper spray. I am certain that it was done in order to divert the police. It was done to have the officers who were working in that particular area, be removed so that those who were coming in through the hole, could come in. So if anyone is saying it was the police who did this, I can say it was not so. The police officers who were working that night, none of us had any tear gas or any sort of pepper spray with us. It's not something that we would normally take out, especially in large gathering where a concert would be in progress. So then it could never been the police. I am certain it was done by those persons who wanted to get into the City Center through the hole that was already breached."
The KHMH says nobody was admitted after the concert.
