At first, he looked like a weapons smuggler or possibly some cross border bandit, but David Frias Rendon, it appears is a Mexican hitman, come to Belize, police believe, to pull of a drug related killing. It's a story that has involved investigators in Corozal and Belize City.
As we've reported, acting on intelligence, police busted Rendon in a Corozal hotel room on Thursday of last week police with two 9-millimeter pistols and 43 rounds of ammunition. He was charged for weapons and ammunition possession, pleaded guilty and then yesterday paid $40,000 in fines. He was also fined for customs offences and paid a $13,000 fine for that, and then paid another $2,000 in fines for immigration offences.
Other charges remained to be heard, but incredibly, Rendon was then offered bail of $25,000 plus a Belizean surety. Before he could get that bail, which he surely had money to pay, Rendon was again picked up by police. He was brought to the CIB Office in Belize City where he was brought under additional charges, these ones far more serious.
He and a Mexican associate traveling with him, Jose Arroyo have both been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, and conspiracy to kidnapping. Police believe they came to Belize to perform a hit on a drug related crime figure in Orange Walk. Both Arroyo and Rendon remain in police custody tonight and will be taken to Belize City's Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
