He made his living as a cane cutter but Francisco Camal won't be cutting cane anytime soon because he lost a hand in a grisly chopping on Sunday.
The 35-year-old Guatemalan national told police that on Sunday evening he was doing laundry behind his house in San Jose village when he was ambushed by a man wielding a machete. Camal says the man demanded money and when he refused the assailant lashed out. Camal's left hand was completely severed from the elbow down and his right arm was left barely hanging. Camal was also chopped in his head. Police found him lying face down in his yard around 6:30 pm. He was released from the KHMH today and orange walk police are still waiting to talk to him.
Police say the attacker probably isn't from the area since he was asking villagers if he was in San Jose. San Jose is about 3 miles from Orange Walk. They also believe the man went to the village to find Camal.
