The Belize Scouts Association headquarters was burglarized over the weekend. Executive of the organization Hilberto Riverol reported to police that when workers at the offices located at the City Center arrived on Monday they found that the locks on the doors had been broken off. Making further checks, they found that a television, a VCR, and a safe containing $4,000 in cash had been stolen. Riverol today told us that the burglary is the second this year and it will affect upcoming summer programs the scouts have planned.
Hilberto Riverol,
"I came to work as usual and we found the doors to the front of the office broken. So we immediately called the police and they came and they took fingerprints and we identified the items that were missing including the safe which contained some money.
They stole a television, a VCR, DVD player, some other small items which we're not too sure what they are. We know that some things are missing like binoculars and knives.
The biggest problem is with the finance. They took the safe and since camps are about to come up in July we have been receiving registrations for camp and donations so unfortunately last week we were unable to do a deposit. It was raining very hard, we couldn't send the messenger out, so we left a bulk of cash in the safe and unfortunately they went with that so that's going to set us back with our camps. But we are determined to find solutions to that and see how we will raise that money to enable the scouts and the people to come to camp.
That is one of the ways that the public can help us out there, by not buying stolen items. If anyone comes and sells them a television or a VCR this week, maybe they could call the police. In terms of our shortage with funds for the camp, if anybody would like to contribute a donation, or an additional donation if they have given to us, or food items. The business community, if they would have something to donate towards camp we would welcome it as well."
Police are looking for the Daewoo brand television, the RCA brand VCR and the safe.
