Police have taken three high powered assault rifles off the streets. The first is an AK47, found in an abandoned lot on Monday in the St. Martin de Porres area.
The second gun is perhaps the most disturbing. Police on patrol on Coney Drive searched three youths who turned out to be students, aged 16, 14 and 12 years old. In one of their school bags, police found, a homemade firearm that had been designed to fire 16 gauge cartridges. All three minors have been arrested and charged for the crime of keeping a prohibited firearm.
The other gun, a nine millimeter pistol was found near Linda Vista Street off the Western Highway, when police saw a young man throw an object into some nearby bushes. Police searched the area and found one Smith and Wesson brand 9mm pistol loaded with 12 live rounds of ammunition. Police have arrested 22 year old Melford August and 19 year old Clifton Flores, both of Jane Usher boulevard in Belize City. Both persons have been charged for the crime of keeping unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
