On Friday, we told you about the estimated hundreds of kilos of cocaine that were found floating in Belize's waters over a week ago and the inevitable outbreak of violent crime that it will lead to. Well, it's on. William Ysaguirre, a caretaker at Yellow Calabash Caye, a tiny island across from Calabash Caye, which is in the Turneffe Island range, reports that on Saturday night at 8:30, drug pirates assaulted him, his family and his associates on the island.
He told police that he was inside the house playing cards with his family when three masked men appeared. They tied up Devon Castillo who the drug pirates apparently believed had knowledge of the whereabouts of some drugs. They tortured him with a hot knife for 30 minutes, and told him they would take him outside to kill him. Castillo claims he got away and hid in nearby mangroves. It was night, and the drug pirates couldn't find him, so they left the island, but only after taking 500 dollars in cash from Ysaguirre's wife. Castillo was treated and released from the KHMH. All who were on the island told police that they know nothing about any cocaine discovery.
Police believe there was a similar violent confrontation in Ladyville but because of the underworld nature of the assault, no report has been made. In that one, the drug pirates are believed to have made off with a vehicle that had been bought with drug money.
And presently, police believe that there is a large quantity of drugs still on San Pedro and Caye Caulker. This morning San Pedro Police intercepted 5 kilos that were being sent by commercial airplane to Corozal. No one was arrested but the drugs were confiscated, bringing the two week total in cocaine seizures to about 45 kilos, or
100 pounds.
Police believe much more packages are out there, and warn anyone who has found cocaine and is hoping to sell it that they are putting themselves in serious, likely mortal danger. Police urge anyone who has come in contact with cocaine to call the police and have it picked up.
