A policeman put his life in the line of fire while apprehending a criminal this weekend.
At around 11 on Sunday police were called out to a robbery in progress on Cinderella Street in Orange Walk Town. 60-year-old Anita Pererra, the proprietor of New Chitos Store, told police that two men entered her store. One of them pulled out a handgun and pointed it at her while the other made off with $700 in cash and checks. The men then jumped on to their bicycles and rode off.
Police then made checks at various locations in the area and found a man fitting the description of one of the robbers hiding under a house on Royal Palm Street. When he saw the police, he pulled out a gun and fired at them. But his gun jammed and that's when Police Constable Reymundo Carrillo ran to the gunman and grabbed hold of him. Trying to escape the suspect hit Carrillo over the head with the firearm causing a deep gash. Carrillo fired his gun hitting the assailant in the leg. He was then detained and found in his possession was a 357 revolver with four live rounds and two expended shells. Also found were a number of checks identified as proceeds of the robbery.
An 18-year-old man is detained pending charges of robbery and aggravated assault. He is also being investigated for other robberies in the area. Police are now looking for his accomplice.
