Police shot and killed a man in the Toledo District on Sunday. At around 7 on Friday morning police were called out to Banana Farm #6 near Trio Village in the Toledo District where they found the body of a man identified as 22-year-old Heraldo Rash.

Investigations by police revealed that Rash was involved in a misunderstanding with a Honduran man identified as 50 year old Jose Hernandez Martinez. During the altercation Martinez allegedly pulled out a machete he was carrying on his bicycle and fatally chopped Rash to the head and body. Martinez then fled the area. In the course of their investigation, police were looking for Martinez and yesterday they caught up with him in an area between Golden Stream and Deep River in the Toledo District.

Police say that when they approached Martinez they identified themselves and fired a warning shot into the air. Police claim that Martinez refused to comply and attacked them with the same machete with which he is believed to have killed Rash. It was then that he was shot to the leg but he continued to advance. It was then that a number of other shots were fired at Martinez killing him on the spot.

Police Commissioner Gerald Westby has dispatched a team of investigators to the area to determine if the course of action by police was warranted.
