On Friday police charged 30 year old Bruce Willacey for the 2004 murder of Police Constable Euwin Armstrong. Willacey was the star witness for the prosecution but became the prime suspect for the police after he testified that he didn't see his friend John Earl Young Crawford shoot Constable Armstrong. He had earlier told police he did see the murder and was granted immunity from prosecution on that basis.
So when he reneged, police angrily revoked that indemnity and charged him for the murder. But while on Friday they said Willacey was the killer, today they took that back - at least their Press Officer G. Michael Reid did. Reid today told us that he Willacey is facing a charge of "contradicting previous evidence" and not murder.
He says that the police charged Willacey with murder on Friday on a directive from the DPP's office. Willacey should be arraigned for the charge contradicting previous evidence tomorrow. That is a misdemeanor and so if he the murder charge is dropped, Willacey should be released on bail. He has been in police custody since Wednesday.
