A policeman was killed in a traffic accident on his way to work on Saturday night. Around 8 pm Constable Rudolph Lopez was driving his Saturday on the Northern Highway on his way to work in the city when he collided into a Mitsubishi Nativa being driven by 25-year-old Darren Miguel who lost control of his vehicle. Constable Lopez and 27-year-old Andrea Pott and 23-year-old Anataco Paquol, who were his passengers, were rushed to the KHMH. PC Lopez later died.

18-year-old Roselia Chuc who was traveling with Miguel received minor injuries. Darren Miguel is on the run and police believe alcohol was a contributing factor to the accident.

ACP Crispin Jeffries,
"Lopez was on his way to Belize City and the male person, whose name has been released, was driving in the other direction. He lost control and fled the scene. PC Lopez was taken from the vehicle but died at the hospital."

Police have detained and charged the man driving but have not released his name. They have heard reports that he was drinking, but because he was not found until 24 hours later the accident, they cannot prove that he was drunk from samples.
