The owner and customers inside a well-known Belize City restaurant were robbed at gunpoint yesterday. At 4:30 three men entered Blue Marlin's Restaurant on Regent Street West with guns blazing and demanded money. The store's owner Douglas Young says they took money from his pocket and stole money and jewelry from two of his customers.
Douglas Young, Blue Marlin's Restaurant
"Three guys came in, two with masks and one without mask, and put gun on us. One of them put it at my wife but my wife scrambled from there and she ran into the kitchen. They wrestled with me and they went into my pocket and took maybe $75 out of the pocket. I had money otherwise but I dropped or they hit me down, I don't know, and then they scrambled and went."
Keith Swift,
They also robbed the customers?
Douglas Young,
"Yes two of the customers."
Keith Swift,
So these men came into your restaurant with masks on. What was the first thing you did?
Douglas Young,
"Well they didn't come in with masks, they came in and then afterwards they put on their masks. They took us by surprise."
Keith Swift,
So you probably just scared out of your skin?
Douglas Young,
"Well I wasn't scared either because they didn't hurt anyone and I didn't get excited either."
Keith Swift,
Did they tell you anything?
Douglas Young,
"All they told my wife was that it was a holdup and then they tried to get into my pocket and I had to wrestle with them."
Keith Swift,
These were young guys?
Douglas Young,
"Young guys, colored fellows, Creole."
Keith Swift,
Has this happened here before?
Douglas Young,
"First time that happened, first time. Several Creole come in here and everybody looks alike."
The robbery was captured on a surveillance camera but no one on tape has been identified.
