24-year-old Tyrone Smith was today convicted of robbery and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Smith was accused of fighting and wrestling with 24-year-old Karima Cano for her cell phone on August 6th of 2006.
Cano was walking on Hicatee Street near the Queen's Square Market when Smith rode up and grabbed her cell phone. The phone fell and Cano says that's when she went to pick it up, Tyrone Smith grabbed her hand and snatched the phone out of it. His assault didn't end as she further alleges that he kicked her, causing her to tumble into a drain. She was down but not out and grabbed his shirt - which is when he kicked her two more times. He then fled.
In his defense, Cano said he was with his girlfriend and another friend when the attack is alleged to have occurred.
