24-year-old Kareem Wright was shot in his neck on Sunday morning and doctors say he may never walk again. Tonight police say the motive was the oldest one in the book - jealousy. At 5 on Sunday morning Wright was returning from the nightclub with his girlfriend Rushan Garbutt and her cousin when he was approached by Marvin "Buda" Reyes on Sarstoon Street. Reyes is Rushan's ex-boyfriend. She told us that the moment she saw Buda, she knew it was trouble.
Rushan Garbutt, Girlfriend of Victim
"The boy who shot Kareem came behind us and he told Kareem to pull up because he wanted to ask him something. I told Kareem to let's go. He said to pull up and the same time he said that, he dived into his pocket. I wasn't really paying it mind and so I told Kareem to let's go. At that time I opened my phone and I called the police and then he fired a first shot. So we ran and then fired two more at me and when we ran, he followed Kareem up Sarstoon Street. So I ran upstairs of my house and I bawled for my little sister. So she asked me what happened and I told her Buda is firing shots at us. So she said she will open the door. By the time I stood outside the verandah and I called police again, that is the time a young man came and told me Kareem got shot. All I could say was why."
Keith Swift,
And this guy was your ex-boyfriend?
Rushan Garbutt,
"Yes and me and him broke up from like January. We didn't really have anything to that extent."
Keith Swift,
How is Kareem doing?
Rushan Garbutt,
"Well Kareem is in a critical condition because they say he has a fifty-fifty chance of living and from underneath his heart going down, he doesn't feel any kind of movement but just now he told me he felt something in his left foot so I don't know what to say."
Keith Swift,
So you feel he won't walk again and that he is paralyzed?
Rushan Garbutt,
"I don't feel he is paralyzed. I think he will walk. He just has to depend on that man up there. If he wants him to lay down, he will lay down and if he wants him to get up, he will get up."
Keith Swift,
How lucky do you feel that none of these shots caught you?
Rushan Garbutt,
"Well I feel lucky because I have two kids to live for."
22-year-old Marvin "Buda" Reyes has been charged with attempted murder, dangerous harm, use of deadly means of harm, and aggravated assault. Wright is still hospitalized.
