The safe and cash register were stolen and the security guard was tied up and beaten. That is what police say happened at the Mata Chica Resort in San Pedro on Saturday night.

The security guard 28-year-old Julio Leal told police that around 11:30 he was on duty when he was accosted by three men wearing handkerchiefs over their faces. One man had a rifle, the other a handgun, and the third was armed with a crowbar. Leal says he was struck in the head with the crowbar and that left him unconscious. With Leal out of the way, the men broke into the resort's main office and stole a small safe and the cash register. The men then fled but along with the safe and the register they took Leal with them. He says they took him about a mile north of the resort on a back street where he was brutally beaten - after which they stole his wristwatch.

The resort has not disclosed how much money was in the safe and cash register. Mata Chica is located 5 miles north of San Pedro. Police say they are following several leads.
