He is awaiting trial for a double murder but Jamil Betancourt was supposed to go on trial today for attempted murder. But he didn’t because the case was withdrawn by the DPP’s office. And that’s because the two main witnesses refused to testify against Betancourt.

One of those witnesses is Eric Savery, the man Betancourt was accused of trying to kill in 2005. But both Savery along with Keith Nunez told Deputy DPP Cheryl Lynn Branker-Taitt they will not testify against Betancourt so today she entered a nolle pros. Nunez and Savery may have declined to testify against Betancourt because they are also on remand at the Hattieville Prison awaiting trial for separate crimes.

With the attempted murder out of the way, Betancourt is now awaiting trial for the January 22nd double murder of 18-year-old Elroy Flowers and 23-year-old Adrian Espinoza. This is the second lucky break for Jamil Betancourt. Earlier this year he walked free from another attempted murder charge after the main witness died. The DPP’s office plans to re-file both attempted murder charges on Betancourt as soon as they find credible witnesses.
